IELTS Speaking part Two & Three aboutdescribe an experience you taught somebody something with Answer and Vocabulary Band Score 6.5-8

Describe an experience you taught somebody something

You should say

- When and where it happened

- Whom you taught

- W hat you taught him/ her

- And explain how you/ the person fell about it

I’m quite hopeless when it comes to offering guidance or instructions to someone, but off the top of my head, there comes a time when I tried my best to help my brother learn some basic guitar tricks. I have been an amateur guitar player since secondary school and have accumulated quite a great deal of musical theory and practical experience. As I heard that my brother had taken up the guitar recently and had been having a hard time figuring out how to place his fingers on the right chords on the guitar neck. For me, it was a piece of cake to play such stuff, but actually it was like pulling teeth teaching someone how to do it the right way maybe because I’m quite bad at instructing others. At first, it was quite challenging since what I explained didn’t make sense to my brother, but I didn’t give up and gave various demonstrations slowly and accurately so that he could understand the gist of the problem. After a while, things started to clear up, and my brother managed to learn the art of playing the chords on the guitar neck. I was quite exhausted after 2 hours explaining, but it was really worth my whiles.

QUESTIONS FOR PART 3

What other people have you ever taught?

From my personal experience, I'm more likely to teach those who are close friends rather than acquaintances or strangers. If I remember correctly, I have taught my father to use Facebook to browse notifications or Skype to chat with his friends. Another occasion is when I taught my mother to operate a hi-tech camera.

Can young people teach old people?

Absolutely yes, age barrier shouldn’t be a concern as human beings need to constantly learn to perfect themselves. There is a great deal of stuff that the youths can lend a helping hand to older citizens in the acquisition of knowledge. As technology is developing at a staggering rate, many elderly citizens seem quite unable to make use of electronic devices like smartphones or other household appliances. Given this, the young generation with their hi-tech savvy can easily teach the elderly about the usage of hi-tech equipment as well as encouraging them to live with the help of technology, which can make lives more comfortable and convenient.

Why is it difficult to teach old people?

The issue is that elderly people are slow in their acquisition of knowledge due to the aging process that is taking place in their brains. They’ve got a memory like a sieve which makes it like pulling teeth for them to retain the knowledge learnt. On top of this, older citizens are quite inflexible in their thinking and may refuse to be taught the way the youths do things. As a consequence of this, they can be at times some disagreements occurring simply because both the instructor and the learner don’t wish to cooperate.

What things are difficult to learn?

It depends on an individual, really. For elderly people, stuff related to technology is often over their head simply because they’re too old at an age to acquire something completely new and modern. For young people, academic studies seem to be giving them a lot of trouble as the youths today are so lazy and often don’t give a hoot about their future career path. As a consequence, they often have poor performance and have a hard time absorbing knowledge at school.

Showing or telling, which is better?

I guess the answer to this question is showing. It’s best to give them several demonstrations of how something works first, so that they can gain an overall picture of the mechanism. Unlike explaining which is often packed with theory stuff showing is a better alternative as it grasps the attention of others better, and learners will have less of a hard time understanding the gist of the problem and fully comprehend.

Do you think most parents are capable of educating their children at home?

I’d be a bit dubious about this. To be honest, I think that teachers, as professional educators are by far the best people to teach children. For all their best intentions, many parents are not qualified to teach and may do a very bad job.
