IELTS Speaking part Two & Three about describe a successful businessman you know/admire with Answer and Vocabulary Band Score 6.5-8

Describe a successful businessman you know/admire

You should say:

- who is the person

- how you know this person

- how she/he became successful

- and explain why you consider him/her as a successful business person.

The person I'm going to talk about one of my friends, Nicholas. Let me tell you more about him in detail. He is working for a multinational corporation which has an enviable reputation for banking and finance. We have been friends since we were knee high to a grasshopper. Honestly speaking, we happened to be in the same class in primary, secondary and high schools, and after that we enrolled for the same university and it turned out that we studied the same major and the same class again. We have a lot of things in common since we have been sticking with each other for such a long time, you see. He is a brainy guy who has accomplished a great deal of his academic study, so it's not surprising that he turns out to be a successful man. His job involves offering consultation regarding financial matters to other companies, so I assume his words carry a lot of weight. I heard it through the grapevine that he has arranged to have his new house built next year. He must have made a fortune by now. Actually, he has been so up to ears in work and I haven't met him for a long time so maybe at his forthcoming housewarming party I can have the chance to talk to him.

QUESTIONS FOR PART 3

Do businessmen have to keep working hard even they are already successful?

I can't agree with you more. Success is the result of a relentless process of trying, which means that people should persist in their efforts even when they have attained a certain degree of success. It is not advisable to rest on one's laurels as this can make you lose heart to make further headway in your business. With a forward looking mind, it's possible to achieve greater successes than you can even imagine.

What kinds of businesses are popular in this city?

In my city, people prefer to open beauty salons or small coffee shops. I can put it down to the fact that most girls or women would try their best to look gorgeous in others’ eyes, and spending money on beautifying themselves is considered as a must, for them. Or in a similar situation, the youths tend to hang out with their buddies for some casual idle chit-chat which means many cafes are doing well recently. Ah, not less popular are some small restaurants that can only accommodate no more than ten people. It can be understandable that many would call on these places for a snack or drink when they have time or feel hungry.

Why do business people need creativity?

Truth be told, creativity is a must-have item on one's list of skills required for a successful career, especially in the business domain. With the ability to come up with new plans to penetrate into the market, as well as being capable of predicting the potential risks involved in the running a business, business people would have a higher chance of succeeding in the area they are doing business. For example, if you own a coffee shop, you're supposed to make and offer new types of drinks to cater for the individual needs of customers. If you don’t have a creative mind and simply stick to your old menu, customers will feel dissatisfied and have no choice but look for other coffee shop for a better taste.

What qualities are needed to be successful in your business?

As far as I’m concerned, it is knowledge and soft skills. First, you will need to, learn business law, marketing and accounting since they influence the basic structures of a company. You need to understand whether it is against the law to run a certain business in your country or how to strategize your plans to popularize your products to more and more people. And finally, basic knowledge of accounting helps you estimate if your business breaks even, makes a loss or profits.

Do businessmen have to work for long hours?

As a matter of fact, most businessmen are up to their ears in work and can hardly manage any time to let their hair down. At the office, they have to write emails to their business partners, deal with customers, and receive phone calls most of the time. Even worse, in some corporate cultures, especially these of the Japanese, staff often leave work really late in the evening; they can work longer than the standard 8 hours to finish off the outstanding workload. So after all, a businessman’s life is not so relaxing as most people would imagine.

How do business people relax?

Just like others, when they are off from work, the first thing they would do is to lie down on the sofa for a short rest or take a warm shower to relieve their stress. If they are at the workplace, it is a standard practice that colleague workers will gather and exchange some casual talks to kill the stress, or some simply take some time off their computer screen to relax their eyes, and stretch their arms and legs to ease their tense muscles.

When do people in your country' retire?

To the best of my knowledge, the required age for retirement in my country is 65 for males, I have no clue what it is for females. I heard that recently the state has even increased the minimum retirement age for the fundamental reason that citizens need to contribute more to the country. After all, it depends on the quality of the labor force of a country.

What are the differences between being a boss and working for others?

They are worlds apart. I personally feel so. What sets working for others apart is that, you don't have to suffer from a lot of pressure, but the motivation is not so strong. As many people contribute their effort to the well being of the whole company, you usually receive help when facing some trouble with the work, but as I have said, many would leave their work at some point because they gradually become less interested in what they are doing. On the other hand, if you are a boss, you should have comprehensive abilities. To put it simply, you have to possess leadership, organizational skills and so on and are responsible for the success or failure of your own business.
