How To Write A Line Graph In IELTS

For Task one IELTS Writing you are supposed to write at least 150 words and you have no more than 20 minutes to finish this task. 3 Marks out of 9 is allocated to report writing.

If you want to get more marks you need to write 170 to 190 words in this part.

There are some important tips that you need to take into consideration before starting to write.

همانطور که همیشه گفته شده است شما می بایست در پاراگراف اول دو جمله بنویسید که جمله ی اول باید درباره ی این باشد که جدول چه چیزی را نشان می دهد و جمله ی دوم یک گرایش کلی از روند جدول می باشد.

In the introduction you need to include 2 sentences. The first sentence is about what the chart shows and the second sentence could be a general trend of the line graph.

Good phrases to start your report in IELTS

The bar graph shows ….

The chart illustrates ……

The graph demonstrates ….

Then reword or paraphrase the topic of the graph. Do not use the same words as the topic since you get no mark for copying them.

 بعد از نوشتن عبارات بالا باید تاپیک یا همان موضوع را با جلمات مشابه و گرامر دیگر باز نویسی کنیم به طوری که معنی جمله تغییر نکند. توجه داشته باشید که جملات تاپیک را کپی نکنید چرا که این کار هیچ نمره ای برای شما نخواهد داشت.

به دو مثال زیر دقت کنید که چگونه جملات پارافریز شده اند.

Topic: The line graph illustrates the amount of oil consumed from 2000 to 2007, in kilos.

Paraphrase: The graph demonstrates the consumption of oil over an eight-year period in kilos.

Topic:  The line graph shows the number of books that four village libraries borrowed in three months.

Paraphrase: The chart illustrates the number of books which were borrowed by four village libraries in a quarter of a year.

Good phrases to start the general trend in IELTS

بهتر است جمله ی دوم که همان گرایش کلی می باشد را بایکی از عبارات زیر شروع کرد.

For example:

As it is obvious the graph shows a decline in number of ….

As it can be seen, there is a sharp increase in the income of …..

It is clear that the amount of oil consumed remained stable in most of ……

در نگارش لاین گراف آزمون آیلتس به چه نکاتی باید دقت کرد؟

First pay attention to your axes

به محورهای نمودار توجه کنید. این محور ها چه اعدادی را نشان می دهند؟

There are numbers in one axe and four months in another

What are the ranges:

این اعداد در چه بازه ی زمان ی می باشند؟ آیا تا به امروز ادامه پیدا کرده اند؟ یا در گذشته تمام شده اند؟ برای هر کدام از این بازه ها شما باید از زمان فعل متفاوتی استفاده کنید. یعنی اگر بازه در گذشته تمام شده باشد باید از فعل گذشته استفاده کنید. اگر بازه از گذشته تا به امروز باشد باید از زمان حال کامل استفاده نمایید و اگر به آینده رفته باشد، زمان های آینده مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد.

Example: From 2000 to 2007

What are your peaks/ highs or your valleys/ lows

بالاترین نقاط و پایین ترین نقاط از اهمیت زیادی برخوردار هستند که حتما باید از آنها برای توصیف بهتر استفاده کرد.

So the butter at almost 160 gram is a peak and low fat starts at less than 20 which is a valley.

Pay attention to the plateaus then:

موضوع مهم بعدی این است که به خطوط ثابت دقت کنیم. این خط های ثابت در چه بازه ی زمانی هستند و چه عددی را نشان می دهد؟ به جمله ی زیر دقت کنید.

Look at the second picture, the consumption of margarine remained stable from 1991 to 1996.

Watch the graph for the patterns and trends, do they have a upward trending or downward trending?

به گرایش های خطوط دقت کنید. آیا این خطوط در نهایت نزول کرده اند یا سعود؟ 

In this picture the butter consumption has witnessed a downward trend in most of the years. But low-fat food had almost an upward trend.

Talk about anomalies and exceptions a bit more in detail.

درباره ی استثنا ها کمی با جزئیات توضیح دهید. مثلا دوتا از خطوط گرایش صعودی داشته اند اما خط دیگر روند ثابت داشته است یا نزول کرده است. این خط ثابت یا نزول یک استثنا می باشد.

As you can see from this picture the consumption of pizza and hamburgers had an upward trend while the story for the fish and chips was different. So fish and chips is a good exception to talk about in detail.
