Homestay

The Liet International Song Contest
(O) KNOWN(KNOW) to many as 'the alternative Eurovision Song Contest', Liet International is an annual festival for (1)(PERFORM) who sing in any of Europe's 82 minority languages, defined as those which are (2)(TRADITION) spoken within a European nation but used today by less than half of its population. The (3)(COMPETE) , which was first held in 2002 in Friesland, Holland ('liet' is Frisian for 'song'), has proved very (4)(SUCCEED) , with the twelve finalists now selected from over 60 initial entries. These have included songs in Frioulian, Occitanian, Romansh, Ladin, Basque, Sarni and even Votian, a language spoken in just two Russian villages and which is now close to (5)(EXTINCT) . Liet International is clearly a (6)(USE) vehicle for encouraging artists who sing in minority languages, but also for raising awareness of the linguistic diversity in Europe and contributing to its (7)(SURVIVE) The event does not enjoy the same (8)(POPULAR) as Eurovision, but it still attracts an estimated television audience of around six million viewers.
